Twist Out

The twist-out has become a very popular natural hairstyle for women with curly and coily natural hair. This style is easy to do but takes a bit of time.
First hair is washed and conditioned. Comb the hair and part the hair in small square sections or flat twist the hair vertically while hair is still damp. Once hair is dry, release each twist carefully. You can use a small amount of gel to your fingers as you release each twist to keep the frizzies at bay. Style the hair as desired.

For best results make sure your hair has been shaped by a professional stylist.

Hair Today… Gone Tomorrow.. Solange cuts it all off!!!!

The sister of singer Beyonce has long resented the comparisons to the famous diva. She once playfully said she would ‘go crazy like Britney’ if people kept comparing her to her sister.

And it seems she might finally have Solange wrote on her Twitter page that she was going through a ‘i wanna cut all my Hair off & have a fade (cropped haircut) phase’.
She has in the past typically worn hair extensions or the lace-front wigs – where the wig is glued on – also worn by her sister.

Ironically in the past she has joked that the constant comparisons to her superstar sibling might tip her over the edge and send her into a Britney-style meltdown.
She said: ‘I get asked about Beyonce all the time but I try and make fun of it.
‘Sometimes I say she’s not my sister. Other times I say I’ve stuffed her in my suitcase and sent it to Dubai.

‘I have to have fun with it or I’ll turn into Britney – shave my head and go totally crazy.’
But whatever the reason, she unveiled the edgy new look as she ran errands in LA with her son Juelz, 4.
However, it seems she not too keen to debut the look on the red carpet. As later on she attended a Dita Von Teese

Solange is seen as the more adventurous sister in comparison to pop monolith Beyoncé.
Behind the scenes, she has written hit songs for Destiny’s Child as well as some of her big sister’s biggest hits.

She finally broke into the music scene as a solo artist with Solo Star, an up-tempo R&B record bolstered by the Neptunes, Timbaland and a host of other super-producers.

Solange – who has released her debut single I Decided last year has received mixed reviews for her self-titled debut album Sol-Angel and the Hadley St. Dreams in which is a mix of electro pop and retro soul. But she has said Americans think she is ‘nutty’ because of her forthright attitude. She told the Daily Star : ‘I get a lot of wrinkled noses because of how outspoken I am.

‘Probably not in the U.K. because women here tend to be pretty frank and have a dry sense of humour but back home they’re scared of me for some reason and think I’m a little nutty.’

Hair & Now: Mixed Chicks the Curly Revolution

ESSENCE.com: Celebrities like Halle Berry can’t get enough of your hair care line. Why do you think your products are so popular among both real women and celebrities?

KIM ETHEREDGE:
I think there has never been a product like Mixed Chicks. Our product not only represents bi-racial and multi-cultural individuals but represents and affects every person whether it be a major celebrity like Halle Berry or an everyday person with combination hair. Women for the most part have struggled for years to find a product for “their” hair that works and that they don’t have to spend a fortune on. No more shopping in the “normal” aisle and the “urban” aisle to mix and match products, now one line that fits the needs of them all. Now when you shop at the beauty supply you can find Mixed Chicks in the middle aisle where the worlds come together and you can look like a celebrity without the celebrity cost!

ESSENCE.com: Describe 3 hair care problems you have encountered and 3 solutions since using and creating Mixed Chicks?

ETHEREDGE:
Common curly hair care struggles would be frizz, dryness, oily hair and tangles. Many products contain alcohol and sometimes too much oil that can dry the hair out and leave the hair feeling hard or weighed down. We created our leave-in conditioner without alcohol so with just the right amounts of hydrolyzed wheat protein (strengthens hair and promotes healing), safflower oil (transforms dry porous hair into soft pliable hair), jojoba oil (defrizzes) and methoxycinnamate (sunscreen), you are able to run your fingers through your hair, your hair is moisturized and there is no frizz. Mixed Chicks deep conditioner contains behentrimonium (derived from coconut) chloride which conditions, softens is an antistatic and flyaway reducer and is a mom’s best friend when washing hair. It helps detangle and making the “hair washing” experience easy!

ESSENCE.com: What’s most difficult about styling and caring for naturally curly and course hair?

ETHEREDGE:
Most of us women struggle with caring for and styling natural hair because we want the look we desire and we want it immediately! Unfortunately we have to learn to style and train our hair. Mixed Chicks deep conditioner is such a great product for naturally curly and coarse hair. Our exclusive conditioning blend penetrates and reconstructs damaged areas, transforming style-stubborn-hair into resilient, easy to maintain tresses.

ESSENCE.com: What style and maintenance tips can you offer our readers?

ETHEREDGE:
Mixed Chicks leave-in conditioner is a terrific product for working women, college students and women who want to look good and don’t have a lot of time in the mornings to style. Apply to completely wet hair and let air dry. After an hour at work or after two classes your hair will dry and feel like you spent the time to style. Curls will last for a day or two and for a refresh look, just fill a spray bottle with 1/3 of leave-in and the rest water and touch up hair the following day.

ESSENCE.com: What curly hairstyles for summer are you most looking forward to?

ETHEREDGE:
The whole symmetrical bob is in style, so I’m looking forward to seeing that cut styled with Mixed Chicks leave-in conditioner.

ESSENCE.com: What styling products can you not live without and why?

ETHEREDGE:
I can’t live without my leave-in conditioner. Whether I’m going out on the town, on vacation or simply going into the office the leave-in conditioner defines, controls and defines my curls with ease without the sticky, heavy and flaky hold many products provide.

Do You Know The Difference.. Natural vs. Organic Products

Even the most savvy and ingredient-conscious buyers can run into a bit of confusion when trying to shop natural. In addition, the whole “go green” movement has made it even harder for us ladies to distinguish what is labeled natural, and what actually is natural.

The first step to becoming a natural shopper is in distinguishing the difference between natural and organic products.

Here’s an excerpt from Twirlit.com that briefly breaks down some important differences:

Natural products, be it skin care, makeup or products for the body, are usually made with ingredients derived from fruit, sugars, and vitamins. When a product says it has glycolic acid, that comes from sugar cane. Products that say they have vitamin B, C, or E, that’s usually considered natural. Also, products that say they have lemon or green apple extracts, they are also natural.

Organic products have to not just say they are organic on the label, but must be certified organic by the USDA or Ecocert (Canadian/UK organization). This certification means those products meet the organic standards of those organization. If you do not see that label, chances are those products are not organic. By having that label, it means there are no pesticides or chemicals such as paraben-free and petroleum-free.

::Note::

If a product is labeled “natural” or “100% natural” that doesn’t mean it is so! The product just may contain some natural ingredient(s), since the regulations for labeling “natural” are pretty loose. (Although there’s definitely nothing wrong with most natural products that are correctly labeled so.) “Organic” on the other hand, if marked with the sufficient and certified label, is about as pure as it gets!

So when scouting for you’re beauty products next time, make sure to look at the ingredients or ask a sales associate if you are unsure of a product’s contents. If going natural (in every aspect) is your goal, it never hurts to do your homework!

Vegatable Glycerin

What is it Vegetable Glycerin?

This is a versatile all natural product with an extended shelf life. It is a carbohydrate made from vegetable oil, often palm or coconut oil. It is water-soluble as well as hypoallergenic. Not only is it safe for use in cosmetics but ingestible as well.

Vegetable Glycerine is a clear, colorless, and odorless liquid with an incredibly sweet taste having the consistency of thick syrup. It is used as an agent in cosmetics, toothpaste, shampoos, soaps, herbal remedies, pharmaceuticals, and other household items. Because it is soluble in both, water and alcohol, its versatility is a major benefactor in its purported growth and popularity within the manufacturing sector. It is invaluable as a natural source ingredient with emollient like properties which can soften and soothe the skin and it assists the outer epidermis in retaining moisture. This helps to explain why it is one of the most popular cosmetic additives used today.

Glowing Skin Benefits

Vegetable Glycerin will help your skin by aiding with moisture retention that is so vital to skins health. We damage our skin with nature’s elements, make up, and water everyday. We use cleaners that contain drying agents and synthetics. We dry skin to the point of being visually flaking, peeling and look dull.

The anti-aging properties of vegetable glycerin helps keep that healthy additional moisture locked into the skin. The result is soft, smooth, silky skin that is radiant and younger looking.
Whether it is young, hormonal skin changes or mature skin the advantage of using this all-natural product will be obvious almost immediately.

Battling Acne

The skin being clean and properly moisturized prevents acne. There are commonly adverse effects such as redness or irritation with the common chemicals used in skin products. Vegetable glycerin is hypoallergenic and ideal for all skin types. There is a visible difference in skin when using these acne cleansers and moisturizers.

Preventing Acne

The antibacterial properties will keep pores clean from clogging debris that causes acne without the inflammation that can occur from using unnatural products.
Healing Acne:The same antibacterial properties in Vegetable glycerin will aid in the healing of acne after it has surfaced without undesirable or harmful effects.

There are very few products on the market today are not only as affordable but also as adaptable to your skin type as Vegetable glycerin. This acne and anti-aging solution is the answer to many dilemmas over what products are safe and effective for all skin types and ages.

Most glycerin recipes that I come across are

3 parts aloe vera gel
1 part vegetable glycerin

combine the two and mix well, use as a hair moisturizer. I have also used this as a facial moisturizer, it works you do need to refrigerate the concoction though ( its the aloe vera) there are also other variations such as a

natural hair spritzer

8 ounces distilled water

1 teaspoon aloe vera gel

1-2 drops of vegetable glycerine

1-2 drops essential oil

15 drops grapefruit seed extract

What’s your hair type?

Type 4

If your hair falls into the Type 4 category, then it is kinky, or very tightly curled. Generally, Type 4 hair is very wiry, very tightly coiled and very fragile. Similar to Type 3 hair, Type 4 hair appears to be coarse, but it is actually quite fine, with lots and lots of these strands densely packed together. Type 4 hair that is healthy won’t shine, but it will have sheen. It will be soft to the touch and will pass the strand test with ease. It will feel silkier than it will look shiny. Type 4 hairs looks tough and durable, but looks can be deceiving. If you have Type 4 hair, you already know that it is the most fragile hair around. There are two subtypes of Type 4 hair: Type 4A, tightly coiled hair that, when stretched, has an S pattern, much like curly hair; and Type 4B, which has a Z pattern, less of a defined curl pattern (instead of curling or coiling, the hair bends in sharp angles like the letter Z). Type 4A tends to have more moisture than Type 4B, which will have a wiry texture

Type 3

When this type of hair is wet, it appears to be pretty straight. As it dries, the hair goes back to its curly state. When curly hair is wet it usually straightens out. As it dries, it absorbs the water and contracts to its curliest state. Humidity tends to make this type of curly hair even curlier, or even frizzier. Type 3 hair has a lot of body and is easily styled in its natural state, or it can be easily straightened with a blow-dryer into a smoother style. Healthy Type 3 hair is shiny, with soft, smooth curls and strong elasticity. The curls are well-defined and springy. Andre defines two subtypes of curly hair. First, there is type 3A hair which is very loosely curled and usually very shiny with big curls. The shorter the hair is, the straighter it gets. The longer the hair is the more defined the curl. Then, there is type 3B hair which has a medium amount of curl to tight corkscrews. It’s not unusual to see a mixture of these types existing on the same head. Curly hair usually consists of a combination of textures, with the crown being the curliest part. Lastly there is a type 3C, is hair type that is not in Andre Walker’s book, but many people suggest that it should be. This type of hair can be described as tight curls in corkscrews. The curls can be either kinky, or very tightly curled, with lots and lots of strands densely packed together.

Type 2

A relatively unusual type, wavy hair tends to be coarse, with a definite S pattern to it. There are three Type 2 subtypes: A- Fine /thin, B -medium-textured, and C – thick and coarse. Type 2A is very easy to handle, blowing out into a straighter style or taking on curlier looks with relative ease. Types 2B and 2C are a little more resistant to styling and have a tendency to frizz.

Type 1

Type 1 is straight hair.

Threading vs. Waxing

Threading eyebrows is becoming the method of choice for many over waxing. Threading uses a string to remove hair, whereas a wax-based resin is placed on the skin and then taken off to rid hair with waxing. Threading has become so popular that threading kiosk are popping up in area shopping malls. In Maryland, I’ve seen threading stations in Owings Mills Mall, Columbia Mall, St. Charles Town Center, and many malls and hair shops in Washington, DC. I’ve watched several people get there eye brows threaded and it seem painful. I’m still on the fence as to try it- a tear still trickle done my face from waxing, and I’ve been waxing 10+ years. Below are the cons and pros of threading and waxing.

Hardly Touches the Skin Less contact with the skin. Threading has little to no contact with the skin. Waxing, however tugs at skin when the hair is removed, and can really irritate sensitive skin making it turn pink to extremely red.

Stop seeing red. The skin mostly gets red because of the wax tugging at the skin, not the actual removal of the hair. If you do get pink from threading, it usually goes away within the hour.

Delicate skin. The skin around the eyes is thin, and can get easily irritated from waxing even if it doesn’t bother other body zones. Threading eyebrows is a true life saver for hair removal in the eye area.

Burn-free method. Most waxes are used warm, but can be heated up too much and burn the skin resulting in extreme pain and scabby skin. There’s no chance of getting scorched with threading.

Threading Eyebrows, Product Free Hair Removal

No Chemicals. Threading solely uses a string to remove the hair, unlike waxing that contains resins and preservatives. Artificial fragrances and ingredients are a foe to many with sensitive skin.

No one’s allergic to string (that I know of). Sometimes having an allergic reaction is mistaken as sensitivity. Waxes are often based on a certain ingredient like: lavender, tea tree, chocolate, acai berry and the list goes on and on. With threading eyebrows there’s no need to worry.

Living Life Naturally

Welcome to my blog, Au Naturale by Miss Sixx. I’m embracing a natural lifestyle and thought it would be interesting to others to blog about my journey. The purpose of this blog is to explore, embrace, discuss, share information, share stories, and affirm the spiritual journey of living a natural lifestyle. Here you will find information on all natural hair styles, natural makeup, natural foods, natural clothing, natural cleaning products, and natural medial treatment.
I recently celebrated the75th birthday of my mother. While reminiscencing with my siblings about our up bringing we realized mother limited us to artificial products. I remember growing up and mom rolling my hair on Saturday evening with brown paper bags ( curls lasted all week) because she didn’t use hair rollers. I remember washing widows with a 50/50 mixture of white vinger and water ( talk about streak free windows!) and taking a spoonful of castor oil in the winter to keep us free from colds. I’m sure I am not able to take the castor oil ( the taste is AWFUL) but, alot of the ole’ school remedies are re entering my life.
I’m no longer a slave to the perm, I’m completely natural and 1 year and 3 months locked, I’m researching and testing recipes for natural hair and skin care products, and watching the type of foods I eat and cook ( can you say ORGANIC!). I hope you guys find my blog interesting and feel free to comment.
