“One of Chick-fil-A’s goals is to promote community connections and enrich the lives of everyone we come in contact with,” said Bryan Ritter, Chick-fil-A franchise Operator . We understand the importance of father-daughter relationships and want to encourage dads to take a break from busy schedules, enjoy their daughter’s company over a meal and have fun!”

My Free-Style Loc Updo

Thanks to the extreme summer heat here in DC – hitting near 100 degrees, I had to figure out how to stay cool with this hair. My locs are now shoulder length and they are HOOOOTTTTTTT!!!!!! I’m still a virgin when it comes to loc styling. I started playing around with a few looks, and got frustrated- so I decided to just “free style” it. No real technique, no dryer, no curlers, nothing complicated.. Just let it do what it do…

Things You’ll Need:
* Styling Gel ( I used Pure Aloe Vera)
* (6) small rubber bands
* (1) large rubber band
* Large straight pins

Instructions:

1. Section hair into 2 sections ( you should be able to make a pony tail in the back, and a pony tail in the front)

2. Gather the back pony tail together- pulling all the locs straight down- take 2-3 locs and wrap them around the pony tail ( you are using the locs to make a pony tail holder) secure the ends with a small straight hair pin or tuck loose pieces into the pony tail. ** You can also use a rubber band or a pony tail holder to make a pony tail and wrap the locs around the rubber band to hide it-if desired**

3. After the pony tail is secured- take the ends (loose locs) and gather them together, put a rubber band around the end ( if some of the locs fall out of the pony tail – its OK-you can secure them later)

4. take the pony tail and roll it under- secure with a couple of hair pins ( I used
(1) on each side and (1) in the middle)- the back is complete

5. (Front) section locs and make flat twist ( I did 6 flat twist going back). Secure the twist with the small rubber bands

6. Once all the twist are created and secured- freestyle and twist- which ever direction it went ( or felt comfortable) is the direction I twisted.

7. Tuck locs as you roll, and secure with hair pins ( I used a total of 7 hair pins in the front)

8. Apply a little Aloe Vera gel to your edges to control any fly aways

9. Wrap hair at night with a satin scarf/bonnet, and oil scalp as needed.

**Note**

This style took 15 minutes to complete.

American Apparel Has Policies About Black Hair

The litany of complaints about American Apparel’s advertising and hiring policies are so long, someone could write a book about them.

The company is known for chic, trendy, affordable locally made clothes yes…but they’re also known for being sexist, judgmental, and discriminatory based on the aesthetic attractions of its owner, Dov Charney (who, by his own standards of appearance, probably wouldn’t be welcome to work in his own store).

If you want to work at American Apparel you’ve got to meet the criteria. You’ve got to have the right look. You’ve got to have a strong fashion sense. And if you’re black, you need to have the right style of hair. Several ex-employees recently wrote into Gawker about their experiences, and one former manager said she was told this about what types of black women to hire during the American Apparel’s open casting calls:

“none of the trashy kind that come in, we don’t want that. we’re not trying to sell our clothes to them. try to find some of these classy black girls, with nice hair, you know?”

i will remember that forever, especially the “nice hair” part. he was instructing another manager and i on who to look for during an upcoming open call, and i sat there dumbfounded, listening to him speak while the other manager made “uh huh, got it” sounds on her end of the phone. the other manager on the call with me later became a district manager, and at one point instructed me to tell two of my employees (both of whom happened to be black females) to stop straightening their hair. i refused to do this, but wondered if the mentality behind her request was related to what dov had said.”

Wait, what?

A company discriminating in favor of black natural hair? Is “nice hair” the new “good hair”?? What does that even MEAN?

I’m not sure what to make of this news from American Apparel, so I’m just gonna keep doing what I do – which means not shopping at American Apparel. Which I couldn’t do anyway, because they don’t do plus size clothes, either. Ugh!

For lots more, check Gawker – they’ve been on this story ever since the company was founded, it seems!

What are your thoughts on this latest American Apparel scandal?

Living Life Naturally

Welcome to my blog, Au Naturale by Miss Sixx. I’m embracing a natural lifestyle and thought it would be interesting to others to blog about my journey. The purpose of this blog is to explore, embrace, discuss, share information, share stories, and affirm the spiritual journey of living a natural lifestyle. Here you will find information on all natural hair styles, natural makeup, natural foods, natural clothing, natural cleaning products, and natural medial treatment.
I recently celebrated the75th birthday of my mother. While reminiscencing with my siblings about our up bringing we realized mother limited us to artificial products. I remember growing up and mom rolling my hair on Saturday evening with brown paper bags ( curls lasted all week) because she didn’t use hair rollers. I remember washing widows with a 50/50 mixture of white vinger and water ( talk about streak free windows!) and taking a spoonful of castor oil in the winter to keep us free from colds. I’m sure I am not able to take the castor oil ( the taste is AWFUL) but, alot of the ole’ school remedies are re entering my life.
I’m no longer a slave to the perm, I’m completely natural and 1 year and 3 months locked, I’m researching and testing recipes for natural hair and skin care products, and watching the type of foods I eat and cook ( can you say ORGANIC!). I hope you guys find my blog interesting and feel free to comment.
Welcome to living life ” Naturally”
