How to start and Maintain Two-Strand Twist

Maybe you’ve thought about starting dreadlocks, a gorgeous hairstyle that is rich in history and speaks to the natural beauty of African hair. Locks can also be formed on non-African hair textures, and provide a unique alternative to more traditional hairstyles. But they’re a major commitment, and sometimes, a commitment you might not be ready to make. So if you’re interested in starting locks but aren’t quite ready to take the plunge, consider two-strand twists.

Two-strand twists, sometimes called Senegalese twists, are formed by dividing the hair into sections, then taking each section and dividing it in half, leaving two sections of hair you wrap around each other. The end result is a rope-like strand of hair that should stay twisted if you have coarse/curly to tightly coiled hair. The benefits of twists over dreadlocks are many. While they have a similar look to locks, they are not permanent. They can be removed at any time, whereas dreadlocks, once formed, generally have to be cut off to be removed.

They are also an incredibly easy style to maintain. Once you twist your hair, you basically don’t have to do much in the way of styling it until you wash it next. If you wash your hair once a week, that means spending a couple of hours twisting your hair after you wash it, and then doing little to nothing to your hair until its next washing.

Twists also allow some versatility with the styles that can be created while your hair is twisted. Depending on the length of your hair, you can leave your hair down, put in a headband or scarf, pull the sides up while leaving the back down, wear a ponytail or create an elegant updo for more formal events.

Another great thing about two-strand twists is that they stay shiny. Locks, on the other hand, form from matted hair and are naturally more dull unless products are added to them, but even then they don’t hold the shine. Twists hold shine easily and with their naturally rope like appearance can end up looking quite beautiful.

Do You Know The Difference.. Natural vs. Organic Products

Even the most savvy and ingredient-conscious buyers can run into a bit of confusion when trying to shop natural. In addition, the whole “go green” movement has made it even harder for us ladies to distinguish what is labeled natural, and what actually is natural.

The first step to becoming a natural shopper is in distinguishing the difference between natural and organic products.

Here’s an excerpt from Twirlit.com that briefly breaks down some important differences:

Natural products, be it skin care, makeup or products for the body, are usually made with ingredients derived from fruit, sugars, and vitamins. When a product says it has glycolic acid, that comes from sugar cane. Products that say they have vitamin B, C, or E, that’s usually considered natural. Also, products that say they have lemon or green apple extracts, they are also natural.

Organic products have to not just say they are organic on the label, but must be certified organic by the USDA or Ecocert (Canadian/UK organization). This certification means those products meet the organic standards of those organization. If you do not see that label, chances are those products are not organic. By having that label, it means there are no pesticides or chemicals such as paraben-free and petroleum-free.

::Note::

If a product is labeled “natural” or “100% natural” that doesn’t mean it is so! The product just may contain some natural ingredient(s), since the regulations for labeling “natural” are pretty loose. (Although there’s definitely nothing wrong with most natural products that are correctly labeled so.) “Organic” on the other hand, if marked with the sufficient and certified label, is about as pure as it gets!

So when scouting for you’re beauty products next time, make sure to look at the ingredients or ask a sales associate if you are unsure of a product’s contents. If going natural (in every aspect) is your goal, it never hurts to do your homework!

Product Review- Carol Daughter Loc Butter

Many of you that know me personally, know that I constantly complain about my curly, sometimes frizzy locs. Usually after I re twist my hair looks frizzy after 3 -4 days. I heard about Carols Daughter Loc butter ( http://www.carolsdaughter.com/). I must admit the $15 price tag was a little to steep for my purse. I’d asked many loc wearers about the product they used and to my amazement none of them mentioned Carols Daughter. I cam upon the Carols Daughter store while I was in Jersey City, NJ and the sales person was doing her job that day! She sold me the loc butter, Marguerite magic for my daughter and gave me several samples of the bath oil and body butter. I had the loc butter 2 weeks before I used it- ok the day is here.. I washed my hair as usual, sat down and started to re twist.. I was initially surprised at the light feeling of loc butter. I wasn’t greasy, but provided the right amount of oil. I re twisted all my loc’s, then took the loc and twisted them into bandu knots for a wavy/curly effect. After I my hair dried I un twisted the knots, and I had a beautiful head of wavy loc’s. I styled them as usual ( the front braided back, and the back hanging down) it lasted two weeks!!!!! I was shocked. I thought ok, it was a fluke, lets try this again.. Again, I washed my hair and palm twisted my loc’s, sat under a hooded dryer and the result was BEAUTIFUL!!!!… The second time, I didnt want the wavy effect, so I really got a chance to see my length, and my hair dried in 1 hour. When I use gels, and shea butters usually my hair takes + 1.5 hours to dry…

I highly recommend Carol’s Daughter Loc Butter for loc/natural hair. I thought long and hard about purchasing the product, because I didn’t know anyone who’d personally tried it. I wasn’t thrilled about the $15 price tag- a little goes a long way, I still have practically a whole jar and I’ve used it twice. There’s no residue build up. The product is light, yet functional. Also, I LOVE the aroma!!! Originally, this was another concern. I had no idea what the product would smell like. Carol’s Daughter did not disappoint! I will definitely purchase it again!

Exceptional Skin Care Recipes with Essential Oils

Exceptional Skin Care Recipes with Essential Oils

The use of essential oils can be tracked as early as 4500 BC. They were used in spiritual rituals and possibly the first medicinal treatments. Today essential oils are commonly used in skin care products, the foundation of aromatherapy, and healing.

Oils are classified into two types: carrier oils and essential oils.

Carrier oils are usually derived from the seeds, kernels or nut, such as almond oil, apricot oil, avocado oil, and sunflower oil just to name a few. Carrier oils have unique characteristics that can provide therapeutic value in skin care products, aromatherapy and healing.
Essential oils are distilled from leaves, barks, roots, flowers and other aromatic parts of a plant or tree. Essential oils are more potent than carrier oils and if applied to the skin undiluted can cause severe irritation or allergic reaction. Therefore, essential oils are mixed with carrier oils to dilute potency. Additionally carrier oils carry the essential oil too the skin, thus the term carrier oil.

Essential oils are not the same as perfume or fragrance oils. Whereas essential oils are created from botanicals, perfume oils and fragrances are chemically created and do not offer any therapeutic benefits.

In skin care, carrier oils are usually referred to as base oils, vegetable oils or fixed oils. Additionally there are animal based carrier oils such as Emu oil (from the emu bird) and fish oils. In general, aromatherapy blends do not include vegetable oils or animal based carrier oils.

Below is a short list of common carrier oils and essential oils and the therapeutic value of each oil:

Carrier Oils:

Sweet Almond oil: Effective makeup remover and moisturizer. It has a great effect on fighting wrinkles, as well as having an anti-bacterial effect on the skin.

Avocado: Moisturizes, reduces appearance of age spots, heals sun damage and scars. Additionally, avocado regenerates and rejuvenates the skin. Avocado increases collagen in the skin and therefore is an anti-aging ingredient in skin care. Avocado oil has superior moisturizing qualities.

Jojoba: Balances skin’s sebum, therefore beneficial for both dry and oily skin types. Also an eye-makeup remover rich in moisturizing properties.

Olive Oil: Contains natural anti-oxidants and vitamins and acts an anti-inflammatory in skin care products. Also used in scar treatments from acne, eczema and stretch marks.

Essential Oils:

Chamomile: An excellent skin cleanser. Good for dry and itchy skin, eases puffiness and strengthens tissues. Smooth out broken capillaries thus improving skin elasticity.

Geranium: A good overall skin cleanser. Wonderful oil for mature and troubled skin and brings a radiant glow and promotes circulation. Safety Precautions: Geranium essential oil is well tolerated by most individuals, but since it helps in balancing the hormonal system, care must be taken during pregnancy.

Lavender: Useful for all skin types as it promotes growth of new cells and exerts a balancing effect on the sebum (oil glands). Has a healing effect on burns, sunburns, acne, eczema and psoriasis.

Lemon: Brightens pale and dull complexions by removing dead skin cells. Has an effective cleansing action on oily skin. Note this oil is photo toxic; care should be taken to avoid exposure to sunlight, ultraviolet light and sun beds after application

Neroli: Useful for dry, sensitive and mature skin as it helps with regeneration of cells and improves elasticity. Helps reduce the appearance of varicose veins, scarring and stretch marks.

Rose: Particularly good for mature, dry, or sensitive skin. As a tonic it is a soothing quality for inflammation and constricting action on capillaries. Consider substituting rose geranium as Rose oil is very expensive, or consider making your own rose oil, get the recipe at

Complete Skin Care Therapy and click on the recipes tab, then essential oils.

Rosemary: Helpful for sagging skin as it is a strong astringent. Tones and tightens the skin. Has a stimulating effect on the uterus, so do not use if pregnant.

Sandalwood: A balancing oil and good for dehydrated skin, and dry eczema. Provides

Ylang Ylang: Has a balancing effect on sebum so useful for both oily and dry skin types.

Below are a few skin care recipes using the essential oils and carrier oils listed above:

Honey Facial Mask with Rose Oil

2 Tablespoons honey

2 Tablespoons sweet almond oil

5 drops Rose essential oil (very expensive, consider making your own essential oil, see my post – Make Your Own Essential Oils, or use Rose Geranium as a substitute)

1 drop Vitamin EMix honey, sweet almond oil and rose essential oil.

Massage onto clean face and neck with fingertips in an upward motion. Allow to set on face and neck for 15 minutes. Rinse off with tepid water. Gently pat dry and see the benefits.

Moisturizer for Normal Skin

Geranium 1 drop

Lavender 2 drops

Sweet Almond Oil – 1 Tablespoon

Apply to face after cleansing and toning. Use a few drops of this blended mixture as needed. Note: when mixing your essential oils with the carrier oil or lotion, let set for 1 to 2 days so the oils can blend thoroughly.

Essential oils are fun to work with and offer so many benefits in skin care, healing properties, and in the home through aromatherapy. The above list is just a sampling of what essential oils can do for you. However, essential oils are very potent and care should be taken when using them. Additionally, a patch test is always recommended as with any new skin care product.

Essential oils are also eco-friendly!

Threading vs. Waxing

Threading eyebrows is becoming the method of choice for many over waxing. Threading uses a string to remove hair, whereas a wax-based resin is placed on the skin and then taken off to rid hair with waxing. Threading has become so popular that threading kiosk are popping up in area shopping malls. In Maryland, I’ve seen threading stations in Owings Mills Mall, Columbia Mall, St. Charles Town Center, and many malls and hair shops in Washington, DC. I’ve watched several people get there eye brows threaded and it seem painful. I’m still on the fence as to try it- a tear still trickle done my face from waxing, and I’ve been waxing 10+ years. Below are the cons and pros of threading and waxing.

Hardly Touches the Skin Less contact with the skin. Threading has little to no contact with the skin. Waxing, however tugs at skin when the hair is removed, and can really irritate sensitive skin making it turn pink to extremely red.

Stop seeing red. The skin mostly gets red because of the wax tugging at the skin, not the actual removal of the hair. If you do get pink from threading, it usually goes away within the hour.

Delicate skin. The skin around the eyes is thin, and can get easily irritated from waxing even if it doesn’t bother other body zones. Threading eyebrows is a true life saver for hair removal in the eye area.

Burn-free method. Most waxes are used warm, but can be heated up too much and burn the skin resulting in extreme pain and scabby skin. There’s no chance of getting scorched with threading.

Threading Eyebrows, Product Free Hair Removal

No Chemicals. Threading solely uses a string to remove the hair, unlike waxing that contains resins and preservatives. Artificial fragrances and ingredients are a foe to many with sensitive skin.

No one’s allergic to string (that I know of). Sometimes having an allergic reaction is mistaken as sensitivity. Waxes are often based on a certain ingredient like: lavender, tea tree, chocolate, acai berry and the list goes on and on. With threading eyebrows there’s no need to worry.

New Hair

I’ve been feeling a bit frustrated with my hair ( I know some of you have been there). Its not long enough for a pony tail or a up do that don’t pull my scalp and the regular “look” was getting TIRED… I always liked the loc styles where the hair is wavy or curled- my problem– how do I achieve that look. So here is my BEST attempt at wavy/curly hair style..

My technique:

  • Bobby Pins
  • EVOO/ Water mixture in a spray bottle (if your hair has been washed and is we/damp you don’t need the mixture)
  • Organic Roots Loc Gel
  • Hooded Dryer

I re tiwsted each loc using the EVOO mixture and loc gel, then take 2-3 loc’s and twisted them into bando knots securing them with bobby pins. After all your hair has been twisted and secured into knots, sit under the hooded dryer 45-60 mins. After hair is dry, remove pins, and finger style hair. ( I left my hair in the knots all night while I slept).

OCM Cleaning Method

The Oil Cleansing Method

Today I decided to wash my face with olive oil and castor oil mix. I did a google search on natural facial cleaners and moisturizers after I broke out ONCE a gain with white heads. Of course I was itching to try it. I asked a few co workers about it and they were very informative. They provided and had mixed reviews; One co worker stated that she broke out around her hair line ( which was a concern because at the time, I had several white heads on my forehead and hair line), a second co worker raved about it and lets say she has the most beautiful skin I’ve ever seen. So I figured since I had the products at home in my make shift chemist lab ( the basement) I had to do it. Results:I like it. It left my face tight like I had washed and toned my face but still smooth and not dry looking. From the reading that I done that is probably the castor oil as that is suppose to be the one that pulls out the impurities.

What you need:
  • Wash Cloth
  • Extra Virgin Olive or Sun Flower Seed oil
  • Castor Oil
  • Flip top bottle/Container to keep the oils premixed.

The basic combination of oils for OCM is Extra Virgin Olive Oil (EVOO) or Sunflower Seed Oil and Castor Oil. The olive oil is for moisture, Sunflower Seed Oil has a more luxurious feel for massage. It sinks into the skin better, aiding the castor oil in transportation deep into the pores and allowing it to draw the dirt and grime to the surface of your skin where it can be wiped away. and the castor oil is the cleansing part. If you have dry skin, you would want to use more olive oil than castor oil. Say 75% olive oil, and 25% castor oil. Oily skin would be the opposite: 75% castor oil, 25% olive oil. I would start with 50/50 when you first start and then adjust.

The OCM Method:
1. On DRY skin, massage the oils all over your face and neck. Do this over makeup, dirt, whatever else is on your face. Take your time and really massage it in.
2. Take your washcloth and wet it with hot, or very warm water (the warmer the better so it can dissolve the oil better, but don’t burn yourself.) Wring it out and then drape it over your face. (This is steaming the pores) do this a couple of times.

3.As the washcloth cools, start wiping the oil off of your face. Rinse the washcloth and repeat as much as necessary.

4.After that, you can rinse your face in cool water.

5. If your face feels tight, you can apply your moisturizer. If it feels good, you don’t need to. You don’t have to use this method every time you wash your face. You can just do it before bed, or in the morning. I do it daily right before I shower. You will be very surprised that this actually works! Castor oil is known to be an excellent skin cleansing agent, but it is too drying for some skin. Extra virgin olive oil is rich in antioxidants and is an excellent moisturizer. Olive oil renews the skin, but it can be too fatty for oily skin types.

6. mix and store my mixture in a clean four-ounce flip-top bottle for convenience. When you go to replenish your oil blend, I suggest cleaning your bottle thoroughly with dish soap or the dishwasher. Better yet, if you can replace the bottle, this is ideal. We want to be extremely cautious in introducing bacteria to the bottle.
