Product junkies will agree — you can spend hundreds of dollars testing out the numerous products available on the market, many of which are supposedly intended for natural hair use. However, breaking the bank is really not necessary for a healthy, strong and shiny natural. You already have key ingredients in your own kitchen and bathroom!

Creating your own hair recipes not only saves money, but allows for a more intimate relationship with your hair — you can gain a much better insight as to what your hair craves, prefers, or rejects with your at-home experiments.

Get creative! There are a few simple rules to follow to find your perfect concoctions:

Don’t mix too many things at once-Start out with simple recipes, say, mixing one main ingredient and adding a small amount of another. It’s much easier to determine what worked and what didn’t when your ingredients list is limited.

Create two-ingredient mixes and try them until you find a mix that works well on your hair. If it’s a “perfect” mix, continue using it! If it’s a “pretty good” mix, retry the recipe with the same main ingredient then alter the secondary ingredient until you reach perfection. You may find you need to reverse the amounts used, making the main ingredient the secondary ingredient.

If there is one particular ingredient you find most always works well on your hair, make it a staple for your hair recipes, adding it as a standard part of all your recipes.

Alter the way you apply the mixes to your hair. Try dousing your hair with your Super Yogurt Surprise while your hair is drenching wet in the shower. Does it work well this way? Try another time by making it a bit more liquidy and spritz it on your dried hair with a spray bottle. Perhaps your hair responds better to this application.

For ingredients, a general rule of thumb is if it’s ok to ingest, it’s probably ok to apply to your hair as well. Pureed fruit, honey, apple cider vinegar and many more items are great additions to homemade hair recipes.

Take note of what works for you and how it worked. Some recipes may be better for clarifying while others make for great deep conditioners.

Search and compare! If you’re a little timid about applying egg whites to your hair, make use of resources available to you before doing so. Search the Internet for your particular ingredients. You just may find others who have tried the same type of recipe and enjoyed success or experienced a nightmare.

Go beyond your kitchen! Many cities have well-stocked health food and natural stores with a huge selection of ingredients to boost your hair recipes. Experiment with essential oils (a few drops go a long way!), xanthum gum (a thickener, also known as xanthan), as well as conditioners and leave-ins you won’t likely find at department stores and drug stores.

Remember, a recipe failure is a good thing. It lets you know what your hair simply does not respond to well. The worst likely thing that can happen with the use of your homemade products is the need to wash your hair again, so get creative!

Natural Ways to have Great Hair For Less

Baking Soda
When it comes to personal grooming, too much of a good thing can spell bad news for your hair. But a thorough cleansing with baking soda at least once a month will wash all of the gunk out of your hair. Simply add 1/2 cup of baking soda to 3 cups of warm water. Mix, Pour, then shampoo as usual.

Freshen up your combs and hairbrushes by soaking them in a solution of 3 cups warm water and 2 teaspoons baking soda. Swirl them around in the water to loosen up all the debris caught between the teeth, then let them soak for about half an hour. Rinse well and dry before using.

Beer
Put some life back into flat hair with some flat beer. Before you get into the shower, mix 3 tablespoons beer in 1/2 cup warm water. After you shampoo your hair, rub in the solution, let it set for a couple of minutes, then rinse it off.

Castor Oil
For healthy, shiny hair, mix 2 teaspoons castor oil with 1 teaspoon glycerin and one egg white. Massage it into your wet hair, wait several minutes, and wash out.

You can also experiment with castor oil for hair on your ends. This rich, thick oil will help your ends becomes shiny and hide the appearance of frizzy, damaged, and split ends. Over time, as you trim damage away, you’ll notice your hair won’t develop split ends as easily. Since it is so thick, try mixing it with Sweet Almond Oil to make it a lighter oil that is much easier to spread and gives it a nice scent.

Mayonnaise
Hold the mayo … and massage it into your hair and scalp just as you would any fine conditioner! Cover your head with a shower cap, wait several minutes, and shampoo. The mayonnaise will moisturize your hair and give it a lustrous sheen.

Olive Oil
Is your hair as dry and brittle as sagebrush in the desert? Put the moisture back into it by heating 1/2 cup olive oil (don’t boil it), and then liberally applying it to your hair. Cover your hair with a plastic grocery bag, then wrap it in a towel. Let it set for 45 minutes, then shampoo and thoroughly rinse.

Did you get almost as much paint in your hair as you did on the walls in your last paint job? You can easily remove that undesirable tint by moistening a cotton ball with some olive oil and gently rubbing it into your hair. The same approach is also effective for removing mascara — just be sure to wipe your eyes with a tissue when done.

Vinegar
Want to put the life back into your damaged hair? You can whip up a terrific hair conditioner by combining 1 teaspoon apple cider vinegar with 2 tablespoons olive oil and 3 egg whites. Rub the mixture into your hair, then keep it covered for 30 minutes using plastic wrap or a shower cap. When time’s up, shampoo and rinse as usual.

** Recipe**ACV Rinse to remove product Build up-
Make the rinse by mixing 1/3 cup of apple cider vinegar with 1 qt. of distilled water. Put the mixture in a plastic bottle.

Shampoo hair and rinse well. Apply the apple cider vinegar rinse to your hair. Leave it in for a few seconds. Rinse your hair using cold water to seal the hair shaft and create more shine. Because vinegar is acidic, using the rinse daily is not advised. .

Dry your hair with a t-shirt. If you notice a vinegar scent after you’re done rinsing, don’t fret. The smell will disappear after your hair dries.

Lemons
For blond highlights, add 1/4 cup lemon juice to 3/4 cup water and rinse your hair with the mixture. Then sit in the sun until your hair dries. Lemon juice is a natural bleach. Don’t forget to put on plenty of sunscreen before you sit out in the sun. To maximize the effect, repeat once daily for up to a week.

Aspirin
Swimming in a chlorinated pool can have a noticeable, and often unpleasing, effect on your hair coloring if you have light-colored hair. But you can usually return your hair to its former shade by dissolving six to eight aspirins in a glass of warm water. Rub the solution thoroughly into your hair, and let it set for 10-15 minutes.

Tea
Turn gray hair dark again without an expensive trip to the salon or the use of chemical hair dyes. Make your own natural dye using brewed tea and herbs: Steep 3 tea bags in 1 cup boiling water. Add 1 tablespoon each of rosemary and sage (either fresh or dried) and let it stand overnight before straining. To use, shampoo as usual, and then pour or spray the mixture on your hair, making sure to saturate it thoroughly. Take care not to stain clothes. Blot with a towel and do not rinse. It may take several treatments to achieve desired results.

**Recipe** use after taking out a sew-in weave or braids to decrease shedding:

4 cups of hot water, swish the tea bag around until the water turns color, let it sit and cool. Put on hair and let it sit for a few minutes and comb through hair. Results – easy detangling, less breakage, and less shedding.

This recipe depends on the length and thickness of your naturally curly hair.

Prep time: 10 mins

Instructions
Mix 1 to 2 parts Bentonite clay
Slowly add *water to the clay until you achieve a pancake mix texture.
Apply to your hair (dry or wet)
Allow to set for between 15 – 20 minutes
Rinse thoroughly until it’s all out of your curls, kinks and coils.

While researching info about Bentonite, I found so much information about this wonder clay. It is also effective treatment for skin rashes like Eczema, blood pressure, blood sugar levels, Autism and the list goes on. I don’t know about you, but I am running to my health food store to whip up a recipe this weekend.

Recipe: Sour Cream Natural Hair Pack

Sour cream and almond oil are especially necessary for hair damaged with acids, highlights or chemical straighteners. Some have said the mixture will loosen curl pattern, strenghten hair,help with detangling, and makes hair less frizzy and more defined. sounds good!

Recipe for Sour Cream Natural Hair Pack:

What You Need:

2 tsp of Sour Cream
2 tsp of Lemon Juice (or Lime Juice)
2 tsp of Almond Oil
1 tsp of Wheat Germ Oil

How to Prepare and Apply:

Mix the ingredients and then apply the hair pack on your hair. Leave the hair pack on your hair for 30-60 minutes. Rinse your hair and wash wash regularly and rinse with water in which you added some apple vinegar. This hair pack should be applied on dry hair.

Nappy Hair Cleansers

Most of the ingredients in these recipes can be found in your refrigerator. Recipes with perishable ingredients may require refrigeration since they do not contain preservatives. These recipes are quick to make and will save you time and money. As with ANY recipe, you may have to play with the ingredients a little bit to suit you. These are hair cleansing recipes that are simple, natural, and beneficial for ALL hair.

Castile Moisturizing Shampoo

1/4 Cup Dr. Bronner’s Castile Soap
1/8 Cup Vegetable Glycerin
1/8 Cup Extra Virgin Olive Oil
1 Cup Water

Mix ingredients. Shampoo as usual. Note: I must say this is my favorite recipe. It cleans my hair without stripping it, leaving it moist with a lot of sheen. This is NOT a thick mixture. However, a little goes a LONG way.

Hair Clarifier Recipe

2 Tablespoon Shampoo
1 Tablespoon Baking soda
1/4 Cup Water
1 Small bowl
1 Spoon or stirrer

Mix water and baking soda together until there is no ‘grit’. Add shampoo and stir to even consistency. Wash hair as normal. Use fingertips (not nails) to massage scalp area. Rinse well with warm water. Use cool water on the last rinse, for shine.Condition and style as usual.

Hair Clarifier Recipe

1 Tablespoon Baking soda
1 Cup Water
1 Small bowl
1 Spoon or stirrer

1 Small bowl
1 Spoon or stirrer

Mix ingredients together. Shampoo wash or conditoner wash as usual. Rinse conditioner. Use fingertips (not nails) to massage mixture thoroughly into scalp area. Use cool water on the last rinse, for shine.

Brown Sugar Hair and Scalp Cleaner

1 Tablespoon Brown sugar
3 Tablespoon Conditioner

Mix ingredients together. Wet your hair and scalp. Use your fingertips (not nails) to massage scalp in small circles. Rinse well. Use cool water on the last rinse, for shine.

Lemon Scalp Cleaner

2 Tablespoons Lemon Juice
5 Tablespoons Conditioner

Mix ingredients. Massage into hair and scalp. Rinse well. Use cool water on the last rinse, for shine.

Lemon Clarifier

2 Cups Warm water
1/2 Cup Lemon

Mix ingredients together. Wet hair thoroughly. Massage into hair using fingertips (not nails). Let sit for 8-10 minutes. Rinse well. Apply your normal conditioner, for shine.
